Chapter Eighteen
AFTER THE BALL AT BRYDON Abbey, a few suitors called on Emma the very next day. She received all of them, one by one, and requested Knightley's opinion on each one. Instead of lurking in her pocket, he hid behind a vase, observing Emma's suitors from his floral hiding place.
âA bit of a slowtop, isn't he?â Knightley remarked on her first suitor, a man named Ewan Suffington. âHonestly, his name should be Sufferington, because it was a pain to listen to him.â
Her second suitor had a habit of constantly rubbing his eyes, which was pointed out by Knightley as soon as he left the room.
âIf he keeps at it, he'll rub them right out of their sockets!â
âKnightley!â Emma chided him, even though she giggled. âYou're too cruel! What if the poor man has a condition that makes the rubbing necessary?â
âThen he should ask the famed Emma Woodhouse to cure him, since you are such an exceptional healer,â answered a winking Knightley.
Her final suitor, Lord Chickleberry, was a ruddy viscount, old enough to be Emma's father. Of course, Knightley had some opinions about him as well.
âWhat sort of name is Lord Chickleberry? With a name like that, I would be a bit embarrassed to introduce myself. He was a bit long in the tooth, wouldn't you say? He's even older than I am, which makes him far too old for you.â
Knightley concluded that none of her suitors were worth pursuing, and he begged her to set her sights elsewhere.
âI have not set my cap at anyone, I assure you!â Emma insistedâuntil Mr. Churchill arrived and she was reminded of his godlike face. As the celebrated wizard swept into the room, Emma rose from the settee and exclaimed, âMr. Churchill! What a pleasure it is to see you. How have you been since the ball at Brydon Abbey?â
Frank dipped into a bow and replied, âWell enough, though I have missed your company.â
âReally? But we were together just yesterday! How on earth could you miss me so soon?â
âYou're very easy to miss, my lady,â replied a grinning Frank Churchill. âYour absence leaves a void. It is felt as soon as you exit a room.â
His words stirred a curious flutter in her heart. âGoodness, Mr. Churchill? Is that not a bit too much?â
âNot at all. And now that we're reunited, my soul is stirred to life once again!â He suddenly captured Emma's hand and brought her knuckles to his lips. âMiss Woodhouse, might I ask a favor of you?â
âCertainly!â Emma replied. âNothing gives me more pleasure than assisting a friend.â
âMiss Woodhouse...â Mr. Churchill started to sit, but he changed his mind and straightened his back. He stayed on his feet, pacing the room as he spoke. âMiss Woodhouse, I was very impressed by your healing skills.â
âGoodness!â Emma chuckled. âThey are nothing to boast about, I assure you.â Her eyes were wide as she glanced down at Knightley. The fairy, amused by her predicament, muffled a snicker behind his hand.
âI would like to put your healing skills to use, if possible,â Mr.
